Introibo ad altare Dei

July — Saint of the Day

Templo de San Cayetano, La Valenciana

Guanajuato, Guanajuato

Guanajuato — where the Cristeros won their first victory.

Built 1765–1788 from pink cantera stone, its three gilded altarpieces were covered in gold leaf from the Valenciana mine — the richest silver vein in Mexico. On February 23, 1927, at San Francisco del Rincón in this state, the Cristeros defeated federal troops for the first time, proving the uprising could win. The gold that built this church came from the same earth the Cristeros bled for.
