The first Cristo Rey monument here was dynamited on January 30, 1928, on Calles's orders — its head and heart survived the blast intact. Rebuilt between 1944 and 1950, the twenty-meter Christ the King was raised explicitly as a tribute to the martyrs of the Cristero War.
